Unusual Business Ideas - Premature Baby Clothes

Having been in business for more years than I care to remember, I love the creativity I see in entrepreneurs. I've talked on some of my other blogs about pet sitting franchises and pop stars - how creative can you get?

However, what I really love is a success story that is born out of adversity.

Such is the case with Ngaire Cockerill a young up and coming business woman based in Hertfordshire, U.K. As it happens I know her father, I play racketball with him. He used to own a printing business and I used to play football in the league his company sponsored in the 70's and 80's. Weird how things connect up.

Richard pulled up stumps about 5 years ago his traditional printing presses unable to compete with the new digital age. But the entrepreneurial genes run strong and it wasn'tlong before he was working in digital media.

But, the genes also went down to the next generation with Ngaire!

The adversity - delivering a premature baby.

"It's something you just cannot be prepared for" she said, "There I was at 28 weeks and all of a sudden my son was arriving".

Weighing in a just under 4lbs, it wasn't enough that he was stuck in the NCIU with all the problems that brings, but she was totally unprepared clothes wise.

"He needed wires and tubes connected all over the place," she recalls "I can still see him now, and we had nothing to dress him in".

Whilst the nurses were brilliant, getting hold of very small baby clothes was difficult. The quality was poor and they were all just smaller versions of normal babygros etc.

"There was no easy way to move baby about with all the connections...and dressing and undressing was just a nightmare".

At that moment, Ngaire made a pledge that she was going to do something about it. So that parents of further prem babies had a much easier time of it.

"Poor fitting and badly designed clothing is the last thing you need when you're thrown into this situation" she says with a passion.

Fast forward 12 months and Dinki Dreams is born. A website specialising in premature baby clothes. French designed, Britiah made. The finest materials and designs that provide easy access for all the necessary connections and IVs.

They have comfort, warmth and functionality to the fore. A true business born out of diversity and a great success story!

How To Start A Photography Business

Love Your Work

It's one of the greatest things in life to be able to do something you love for your work. I work with a lot of photographers doing their SEO, and I see this "love of work" in virtually every one I speak to. I enjoy taking pictures, but the enjoyment, satisfaction these "Guys" get (most of them are female) when they take the perfect shot in beyond compare.

So, in the latest of my client series I spoke to Yvette Craig of (funnily enough) Yvette Craig Photography based down on the Kent / Sussex border.

So, why photography Yvette?

"Well, I've always had an interest" Yvette started, "and that interest was developed by my father who was a keen photographer too".

"He was never professional though", she continued, "however, I'd developed myself to a stage where I felt I was good enough to go professional. I'd done a few weddings for friends, a couple opf boudoir shoots and some family pictures I was particularly proud of".

Going Professional

That's all well and good, but how did you make the transition from part time to full time photographer?

"That's a really interesting question", she smiled, "I did a lot of research about the best courses to go on. Yes, i took every professional course going to make sure I knew everything there was to know about light, shade, angles and all types of wild and wonderfulphotographic techniques".

How long did that take?

"A couple of years, I used most of my holiday from work to go on courses and learn the technical side ofmy trade. Coupling that with my creativity finally gave me the confidecne to know I was taking top notch pictures that people felt proud to show off".

Remember It's A Business

So, what about the business side of being a photographer?

"I took a superb course that really taught me everything that is involved in running a photography business. It was outstanding and even taught you how to use specialist web software to build a website that fitted the niche".

Indeed, Yvette's website is amazing. It showcases her work superbly well and is easy to navigate around and to find exactly what you want. You can find Yvette's site here.

So, how many years down the road are you now?

"I've been professional for seven years now. I can't imagine doing anything else. I love my work, I love seeing people being absolutely "wowed" by their pictures. It is just so immensley satisfying and I love it".

So, if you're around the South East corner and are looking to have a photo shoot for a wedding, family, equine or a risque boudoir shoot, look up Yvette at http://www.yvettecraigphotography.co.uk/

A Photographer's Eye View

I do a lot of work with photographers doing their SEO for them and it gives me a truly unique insight into what makes a photographer tick.

So, I was working with Alex Davies from Alexandra Jane Photography and over lunch we had a really interesting chat about all things "taking pictures". Alex is an interesting case in point as it happens. She had a very successful photography business in Lancashire. However, she had to move due to her husband's work commitments so had to start all over again in Oxford.

The first thing that says to me is "brave lady"! To walk away from a thriving business in an area you know initmately and start in a very different area not knowing anyone or having any contacts is a big thing.

This made me very interested in what motivated Alex. I'm a bit of a student of psychology and "positive attitude" on the side so I was interested to find out. It was a very revealing chat.

The first thing that Alex made abundantly clear was her complete and absolute love for taking pictures. O.K, I can understand that because I know you can get a real buzz from seeing a top notch picture. I can also understand the buzz you'd get as the photographer when a picture turns out beyond your expectations. I have experienced that on the odd occasion myself!

So, I wanted to get a bit deeper into why she loves it so much.

She agreed that getting the perfect picture from a technical viewpoint was very satisfying. So, getting the light spot on, the exposure, the shadows, any effects and the general goodness of the image created. That was almost a by-product for Alex.

And, when she really thought about it, she experienced what I can only describe as a "lightbulb" moment.

"Do you know", she said. "It's the emotion I get into the pictures....", she paused. "That's what makes it so exciting, satisfying and, yes emotional for me too".

"I just so enjoy seeing the love in a newly maried couple. The joy in their faces, that look that says right at this moment - I love you", she thought for a second. "That joy between a mother, father and child when they're kicking leaves or a father is picking up his son and they look straight at each other with joy and laughter".

"It's beyond priceless".

Looking at some examples that Alex showed me of her favourite shots, I can see exactly what she means. It's a nano second in some cases and she has to capture that. It's a glance, a knowing look - a split second that encapsulates everything the situation is about. It's absolutely charged with high emotion. It's beautiful.

"It is just so incredibly rewarding to be trusted to do this and then to actually deliver what will be a lifetime memory for the people involved", and she drifted off into a past photo shoot. We drank the rest of our coffee in silence looking at some brilliant images of weddings and families. Indeed - priceless.

If you're interested in a photographic shoot for family, lifestyle or indeed an upcoming wedding, you can find Alex's site - Alexandra Jane Photography - checking out this link.
